Ultra-fast finish for Solar Team 21Connect

23 November 2011

Chasing perfection at the World Solar Challenge, Solar Team Twente selected Avery Supreme Wrapping film for its innovative, ultimate finish.

Light, bright and super smooth, the new 21Connect sun-powered car from Solar Team Twente raced 3000 kilometers across the Australian outback to claim fifth place in the prestigious World Solar Challenge. That is the Team’s best finish ever.

Battling bush fires, blistering sun and pounding rain, the innovative use of Avery Supreme Wrapping film gave 21Connect a competitive edge, says Solar Team Twente driver Jens Hegeman.

“We are focused on partnering with innovative companies like Avery Dennison to find new solutions to improve our car,” says Jens. “With weight a key factor, the benefits of wrapping the car with Avery vinyl are significant for its speed.”

Eddy Speelman of Dutch car wrap specialists VinyTouch says Supreme Wrapping film is a game changer with a super-thin, hard-wearing finish that’s perfect for this performance event.

“Supreme Wrapping is one third of the thickness of traditional lacquer finishes. This is a significant weight advantage. The film is also super conformable, making it easy to apply over the car’s complex curves for a great-looking, super smooth finish. The 152cm-wide rolls also meant we could wrap the whole vehicle in 2 sheets using a single central seam.”

Helen Mets-Morris, vice president and managing director of Avery Dennison Graphics and Reflective Solutions, says supporting Solar Team Twente is part of Avery Dennison’s focus on bringing new, innovative ideas and research to its products on a global scale.

“The enthusiasm of the students at University of Twente makes for a great partnership as they pursued the world title,” says Helen. “It’s exciting to partner with these college students that are pushing technology to the edge with the passion to win the race.”
