Art in the metro

19 July 2011

A combination of Avery Graphics™ films and HP printing technology help to transform metro stations in Barcelona into viewing galleries for paintings from Catalunya’s National Museum of Art . . .

For a month this summer, four Barcelona metro stations are transformed into viewing galleries housing reproductions of some of the most important paintings in the collection of the Catalunya’s National Museum of Art (MNAC). HP and Avery Dennison jointly sponsored the project – and, for such an important manifestation of quality digital print, it was HP who chose Avery inkjet-printable media for the task: Avery MPI 8112, with surface protection from Avery DOL 3100.

Promoting culture and the arts

Located on the station platforms, concourses, and interchanges, the stunning reproductions are part of the Museum’s campaign – ‘MNAC moves for you’ – to make metro users more aware and familiar with art. Some three million people will have the opportunity to see the paintings. This project, in turn, is part of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona’s broader aim of promoting culture and the arts for public transport users.

Digital print on Avery Graphics films

The iconic works selected for the metro ‘galleries’ were faithfully reproduced by HP Latex digital printing technology, using environmentally-friendly water-based inks. They were printed on a variety of Avery Graphics films, and Nivell Publicitari of Barcelona carried out the challenging application process at the metro stations.

The reproductions span 1000 years of Catalan art from the Museum’s extensive collection – Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic and modern. They have certainly given Barcelona commuters a different travel experience!
