From a single machine making the world’s first self-adhesive labels, to becoming the global leader in labelling and packaging solutions, Avery Dennison still operates based on R. Stanton Avery’s view that the customer comes first.

The Avery Dennison story started 75 years ago when R. Stanton Avery identified market demand for clean and efficient self-adhesive labels. In June 1935, from a loft in downtown Los Angeles, he created the self-adhesive label and label-making machine that kick-started our industry.
The Avery result is history
The result, as they say, is history. Today, Stanton’s vision of exceeding customer expectations has been realised in a FORTUNE 500 company with US$6 billion in global sales. Along the way, Stanton registered eighteen patents on pressure-sensitive materials and production technologies as he continually explored better ways to service the markets.
Avery Dennison is saluting the legacy of our founder in our 75th anniversary celebrations. Company chairman, president and chief executive Dean Scarborough says innovation allows Avery to focus on delivering the best possible service in a rapidly developing market.
“I’m excited about the future as we honour our past”, says Mr. Scarborough.
“That legacy continues to propel the company forward as we invest in new markets, products and technology to better serve our customers throughout the world.”
Recognition by New York Stock Exchange
R. Stanton Avery’s vision to grow his business by creating innovative solutions was recognised by the New York Stock Exchange when Mr. Scarborough and his leadership team were invited to ring the famed closing bell on 2 June 2010.
